In July 2007, Avi Arad revealed a Venom spin-off was in the works. The studio commissioned Jacob Aaron Estes to write a script, but rejected it the following year. Sony announced that in addition to a new director and writer, they wanted to replace Topher Grace in the lead, as they felt he was unable to "carry" a blockbuster.

Well I'm glad that they are going to replace Topher. He was way to skinny for the role as Venom. Spiderman 3 was lame as a whole though but Topher made it worse in my opinion.
